Shaky Shivers, 80s-Inspired Horror Film Directed by Sung Kang, Will Be Released This Fall

Cinedigm has picked up the North American rights to Shaky Shivers, an 80s-inspired horror film directed by Sung Kang. The film marks the directorial debut for Kang, who is best known for his acting work, including his role as Han in the Fast and Furious franchise. The news of Shaky Shivers getting picked up for release arrives as Fast X, the latest installment of the series which brings back Kang, premieres in movie theaters.

Shaky Shivers is planned for a release in theaters in the fall followed by a streaming release on Screambox. The film is making the rounds in the festival circuit in the meantime, having won the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Gasparilla International Film Festival in Florida. The movie will premiere in Canada next month at the Dark Bridges Saskatoon Horror Film Festival as well.

In the movie, viewers are taken on a “hilarious and nostalgic journey to an abandoned camp where two young women, played by Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer), stumble upon a book of magical spells. Surrounded by classic monsters and drawing inspiration from 80s horror films, Karen and Lucy find themselves facing a series of supernatural occurrences after a fateful encounter with an old woman. As zombies, werewolves, and Bigfoot wreak havoc, the duo must navigate a wild night, armed with an unfamiliar spell book, to restore order before their lives unravel completely.”

1 Sung Kang Was Inspired by Classic Horror Films from the 80s

Shaky Shivers came together during the Covid-19 pandemic when Kang decided to pursue directing. He wanted his first movie to be a tribute to the horror films he enjoyed watching in his youth, and the film is set in the 90s while capturing the spirit of classic 80s films. Kang spent five weeks at a shuttered Girl Scout camp, perhaps one of the creepiest shooting locations cyou can imagine, to film the feature.

“Cinedigm knows the horror space so well, so as a first-time filmmaker, I’m grateful to know we’re in great hands,” Kang said in a statement. “It’s been a great festival run thus far with the film, finding our audiences who have loved the film at the screenings. Winning the Grand Jury Award at Gasparilla blew my mind. The whole idea was to make this for the old school horror hounds and for them to share it with their families today. Little by little, we’re doing that. I couldn’t be more excited about rolling this film out.”

The script comes from Andrew McAllister and Aaron Strongoni. Nina Yang Bongiovi, Kevin M. Lin, Michael Y. Chow, and Brian Yang executive produced the film, while producers include Jean Shim and Luci Y. Kim. The two stars of the movie are Brooke Markham and VyVY Nguyen, while Sung Kang directed.

Shaky Shivers will be released in theaters and on Screambox this fall. An exact release date has yet to be announced.
