What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 ? What does it compare to?
New for this year, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is a three-row SUV that seats up to eight passengers with a luxury-like finish. It compares to everything from Mazda’s own CX-9 to the Volvo XC90 and the Lincoln Aviator, as well as the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.Â
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 a good SUV?

We won’t know it until we drive it this spring, but it represents Mazda’s first major foray into plug-in hybrid powertrains, and a new push into the premium segment. An eventual replacement for the CX-9 three-row SUV, the CX-90 is also Mazda’s largest vehicle. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 ?
Longer, wider, and larger than the CX-9, the 2024 CX-90 is all new and ushers in the era of electrification for Mazda.Â
Mazda introduces two new powertrains on the CX-90. A 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-6 pairs with a 48-volt battery and a small motor for a mild hybrid setup that makes 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. A plug-in hybrid model pairs a 2.5-liter inline-4 with an electric motor powered by a 17.8-kwh lithium-ion battery pack. It makes 323 hp and 369 lb-ft, but Mazda would not disclose range and other performance specs until closer to launch.
In either case, the motors effectively replace the torque converter and are sandwiched between the engine and a new 8-speed automatic transmission, which is a shift away from the 6-speed automatic ubiquitous in Mazda’s current lineup.Â
The standard all-wheel-drive system sends about 80% of the power to the rear wheels under typical driving conditions, Mazda said, and in electric mode the CX-90 can power all four wheels. A kind of brake-based torque vectoring system Mazda calls Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) applies braking force in turns to limit body roll and improve grip and stability. A new platform allowed Mazda to equip the CX-90 with a double wishbone suspension up front and a multi-link suspension in the rear.Â
The platform also made for a wider body and longer wheelbase to better fit up to eight passengers. Mazda also said it could sit six or seven passengers with second-row captain’s chairs, and the option to have either two or three seats in the third row, which is unusual. The battery pack fits under the third row, but two normal sized adults could fit back there. Â
It has the long nose and athletic profile of the Lincoln Aviator, but with a rounded rear and integrated rear roof spoiler of German rivals. A bigger and bolder take on Mazda’s current design language, the CX-90 sports prominent chrome trim that traces around the broad and vertical grille, accenting the lower lip, then runs down the sides on the rocker panels and above, arcing over the greenhouse. Vertical air intakes up front and large 21-inch wheels complete the muscular look. As in other Mazdas, smoothness defines the body, giving it a more sophisticated look than all the cuts and creases favored by some rival crossover SUVs.
Inside, the dash sports a new 12.3-inch display screen, and the center stack waterfalls into a horizontal band of climate control panels before ending in a recess to stow phones and other items. The center console can be covered in wood, and a mechanical gear shifter sits above the familiar controller dial for infotainment. The long, low uncluttered dash gives it a premium feel.
Expect the CX-90 to continue with Mazda’s stellar safety record, and it comes equipped with standard driver-assist tech such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control.
