What kind of vehicle is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class? What does it compare to?
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is the automaker’s smallest and least-expensive sedan, even though its maker markets it as a “coupe.” It compares well with the BMW 2-Series and Audi A3.

As long as you have no illusions of SUV-level practicality, the 2023 Mercedes CLA is a great choice thanks to its svelte styling and impressive road manners. It’s a 6.0 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class?
These models carry over for 2023.
The CLA lineup comes in three forms, all of which share a coupe-like silhouette but offer four doors for a modicum of personality. Like a scaled-down version of the company’s bigger CLS, the CLA is a style statement that manages to look ritzier than its admittedly costly $40,000-plus price tag. AMG versions—both those with AMG-breathed upon engines and those with AMG styling packages—look a little more tarted up with their enlarged air intakes and upsized wheels, but they don’t detract too much from the overall shape.
Inside, the CLA has clean lines that work best with the optional twin 10.3-inch displays housed behind a single glass panel. Mercedes offers a bevy of trims and upholsteries, many of which cost extra or require various packages to unlock. Shop wisely.
A trio of turbo-4 powertrains run from a fleet 221 hp to a ferocious 382 hp in output. Base cars are quick, CLA 35s are downright fast, and the fire-breathing CLA 45 can hustle like a supercar. The CLA rides well enough, but you’ll want the available adaptive dampers if you fill its wheel wells with the biggest rolling stock available.
Where the CLA truly acts like a coupe is inside. Front-seat riders have OK space, but rear-seat riders will need to be short. We consider the back seat an extension of its trunk, especially since the actual cargo area is roadster-small. The interior has a classy, upscale look, though the CLA’s place at the bottom of the Mercedes hierarchy is revealed in occasional cheap interior bits.
No crash testing has been performed. Automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitors come standard, but adding adaptive cruise control and other driver-assistance tech notches the price tag up considerably.
How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class cost?
The CLA starts at about $40,500 but climbs rapidly from there. You’ll find standard synthetic leather seats with power adjustment up front and a 7.0-inch touchscreen, but you’ll probably want the 10.3-inch displays, navigation system, and adaptive cruise control that transform the CLA into a proper small luxury car. All-wheel drive runs another $2,000, so figure at least $47,000 for a moderately equipped CLA 250.
AMG versions shoot even higher, with a loaded-up model topping $80,000.
